That switching to software rasterization improved performance is proof that something in the X stack is causing the poor performance, as the Qt raster renderer is pure software, except for pushing the pixels to the server. The proprietary nvidia drivers are notorious for having crappy glyph rendering performance, so I'd suspect that the issue most likely lies there.
