The same problem arose since an upgrade of the cupsys package - smb is not present. Printer - Canon bjc 4300 OS - ubuntu 6.06 cupsys v 1.2.1-0ubuntu2 printing icon displayed, but no output from the printer. changing printer model to canon bjc 4200 (shares same driver with canon bjc 4300 ) is a workaround
