** Description changed:

  This is with a Dell Optiplex XE desktop system:

  Playing sound yields to output at all; not on a possible internal
  speaker, nor on the external jack with headphones plugged in.
  Additionally, the mic jack does not capture sound.
+
+ === Current workaround for Lucid ===
+
+ 1) Install snd-hda-tools from https://launchpad.net/~diwic/+archive/ppa
+ 2) Add these lines to /etc/rc.local:
+     hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x1a 0x701 0
+     hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x1b 0x701 0
+ 3) Reboot.
+
+ You won't have auto-mute (i e line-out mute when headphones are plugged
+ in), but at least basic playback and recording should be working.
+
+ ======
+ There is a corresponding bug #582199 for Dell Optiplex 380 and bug #588031
for Dell Optiplex 980.
