Thanks for responding. It is not really necessary to install Maverick
(which will become 10.10) to test with it. You can download the latest
ISO image, and use the live CD to run Maverick for a test. That way it
will not install anything on your current system and save you the
possible problems associated with trying to backup, install something
else, and then restore what you already had. Simply download from
http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . After burning to a cd,
you can restart with the cd in the drive and choose "try without
installing" when asked. Do not allow it to install. This will give you
the actual development environment to test in, without touching the
already installed and working version you have.
