there can be several reasons. but the first that comes to mind is some
serial port privileges issue at startup: check
/usr/share/doc/nut/README.Debian.gz, section (II) Installation -> device
port permissions. mge-utalk may fail to switch to the nut user if the
permissions are set *after* nut startup.

This is my /etc/default/nut:
> # start upsd
> START_UPSD=yes
> # start upsmon
> START_UPSMON=yes

once more, this file is now replaced by /etc/nut/nut.conf.
this one must contain the line:
MODE=standalone

please confirm that you have done this.
