Public bug reported:
I have ubuntu 10.04. I was trying to update the software to run movies. I had
problems of the colors inverting on play back and tried to fix it by
downloading some extra packages suggested on the Ubuntu site. There was also
some advice to update the driver hardware and to enter in some words through
Applications>Accessories>Terminal.
Through all of this something weird happened and I don't know how to fix it. I
got a red circle on the top of the screen with a long white rectangle through
the middle of it and it said:
An error occured, please run package manager from the right-click menu or
apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong.
The error message was: 'error:opening the cashe (E: Malformed line 64 in source
list/etc/apt/sources.list(absolute dist), E: The list of sources could not be
read.) This usually means you installed packages that have unmet dependences.
Also this happened at the same time, When I go to the update manager to check
for updates, I get this message:
Could not initialize the package information:
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update manager' package and include the
following error message:
'E:Malformed line 64 in source list/etc/apt/source.list (absolute dist), E: The
list of sources could not be read:
What does all this mean? Is there a way to fix this? I looked for a system
restore to set it back to the way it was before I downloaded things the
terminal but I have not been able to do that. I really do not want to
re-install Ubuntu again.
I am hoping some of you more experienced Ubuntu users might be able to know
what is going on here and can help me with it.
thank you.
