Completely by accident I discovered that cold plugging a SATA drive on the Intel controller works. My boot drive is PATA and I only ever hot-plug SATA drives for temporary usage. Hot-plugging of SATA drives worked on the Intel controller under Ubuntu 8.04. Now under 10.04 hot-plugging does not work.
