After some googling I found this workaround: http://art.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9298037&postcount=6 Instead of modifying modprobe.conf I edited alsa-base.conf, and after fiddling around in sound controls and plugging and unplugging the headphone jack I got them to work.
