OK I've tested on a Maverick daily from July 25th. There's definitely a
change as on the 2Ghz laptop pulseuadio no longer dies with a "Killed"
message and the wav sample is played (manually using speex-float-3
rather than Ubuntu's default of speex-float-1 will still show the
problem though). On a 900Mhz EeePC no sound is played (it looks like the
CPU does not have enough power to keep up). Effectively, this issue has
been dramatically improved although I'm a little unsure as to what part
of the system has done it...
