Yay! After installing that I have the microphone working on the USB headset (though not on the sound card). Unfortunately now there's no sound output on the USB headset. :-(
To complicate matters further, sound output on the sound card seems a little erratic. As I play with the sound preferences sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't—under as far as I can tell, the same settings as before. Switching the output between the USB headset and the sound card and back then fixes it.
