I don't think I ever had this kind of problem with synaptic. An assertion failure implies that I have a copy of the source, which I do not. Once upon a time I was an O/S programmer, but that was in the 1960-1980 time frame. I haven't looked at serious package code since then, and while it might be interesting, now that I have retired, thanks, but no thanks.
