Binary package hint: pulseaudio
The Setup:
I have the appropriate cable connecting the headers on my nVIDIA GTX 280 to
those on my Intel DX58SO motherboard. The monitor in use is a "VIZIO VO32L10A
LCDFHDTV". The graphics card came with a DVI-HDMI adapter which allows audio to
pass through. The monitor and GPU are connected with an HDMI cable. The setup
has been tested using Windows, where S/PDIF pass through works with a bit of
tinkering.
What I did:
Upon login, I proceeded to "Applications->Preferences->Sound". Under the
"Hardware Tab" I selected each option containing "IEC958," Those were:
Digital Stereo (IEC958) Input
Digital Stereo Duplex (IEC958)
Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output + Digital Stereo (IEC958) Input
Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output + Analog Stereo Input
And then opened an mp3 file (using totem) from nautilus to test the
speakers built in to my monitor. None of the options containing "IEC958"
produced any sound through my monitor's speakers.
What else I've tried:
I've added my user to the "audio" group. I've upgraded to the newest nVIDIA
driver (256.35). I've removed pulseaudio using "sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio".
I've upgraded alsa using the "alsa upgrade script" found:

None of this resulted in sound through my monitor's speakers.
