Wow, I reported this 14 months ago and had forgotten about it. In short this bug has no meaning to me anymore. After experiencing some other issues in (IIRC) Q3 2009 I abandoned Ubuntu and switched to Debian testing. I find that much more reliable than Ubuntu stable.
I can say though that I can't reproduce this in Debian testing. I assume that this means that [whatever made it right for me] in Debian should make its way downstream to Ubuntu at some point - if not already.
