Using Lucid with latest available updates:
When you turn off the KDE splash trough,
System settings | Appearance | Splash Screen
and set it to "None"
When the desktop is drawn, it displays a white rectangle in the left
corner of about two third of screen-width, and 1/3 of the screen-height.
That flashes, and goes away in about 1second.
