In particular, the test is "if /boot/grub/device.map was present, did
its previous contents consist of exactly one line, or not?".  I made the
assumption that if it contained exactly one line before then it would
contain exactly one line afterwards, and vice versa; apparently that is
not true on your system for some reason.

Is there anything funny going on at all?  Perhaps you installed from a
USB stick and so the USB stick showed up in device.map.  (If so then
this is exactly the sort of situation that could result in the problems
mentioned in the warning message.)
