Thanks for reporting this issue. How would aptitude/apt/synaptic know
which user files to purge, since you can purge an applciation and want
to keep the configuration for use when it is reinstalled?

Purge can be used as you are, to get rid of those applications that are
no longer desired. It can also be used to remove an application that you
wish to reinstall. If you want to reinstall it, do you want to keep the
configuration files or remove them?

This creates many issues with those user files, thus you are required to
remove the ones you no longer want manually.
