I just decided to do a simple test. I tried running the synergy server
from an old ubuntu edgy installation I had on my Thinkpad.

In fact it showed three interesting things:

1. I don't need ssh to be running to produce the bug.

2. I have never seen the bug before when running my edgy installation.
The bug started to appear a month or two ago with feisty. However, the
bug do in fact appear in my little test (running the synergy server on
edgy) which leads to the question: Is it the synergy client (running on
feisty) that has the bug?!

3. On my old edgy installation I have the package synergy 1.3.1-2ubuntu1
installed. In fact it looks like the packages in edgy and feisty are the
same which leads to the conclusion: If the synergy packages are the same
then something else must be causing this.
