Probably not.  I've tried installing and removing but with the same stall point.
sudo apt-get remove --purge mysql-server-5.1 was unsuccessful also.  That 
command results in:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily 
unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another 
process using it?

I don't know where to go from here.
