Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Clean install of Ubuntu 10.04.

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:    Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release:        10.0

The Totem Movie Player cannot play MP4 files. It lets one browse and select one:
  Movie -> Open...
However, after selecting an mp4 file and pressing "Add" the dialogue box closes
and nothing further happens. There is no message at all.
The only thing that may appear to change is that that at the bottom of the
totem window it says:
  Stopped 0:00 / 0:/00

If it cannot play a particular file format it ought to at least inform
the user if i cannot play a particular file format.

I installed VLC (reports itself as 1.0.6) from Synaptic and this was
able to open and play the mp4 file.
