And to make Michael Chapman's workaround effective at every boot-up,
just add the command (without sudo) to the /etc/rc.local directory. You
will need root privilages however to edit this directory.

For further info, #6 does not work on my Acer 5732Z..there is no need
for the nomodeset or i8042.nomux grub entries. The touchpad switch works
fine out of the box

I have the same probs as Kakadu #8 with the acpi_osi="linux" option but
at least the fucnction keys do dim and brighten, even if in reverse.
