Hallo Larry, 
looking at your syslog (system logs) file we can see that is full of errors 
like this:
Aug  7 16:52:59 larry-desktop kernel: [1035036.872965] ata2.00: failed to 
IDENTIFY (I/O error, err_mask=0x4)
Aug  7 16:52:59 larry-desktop kernel: [1035036.872970] ata2: hard resetting link
I acconseil you to take a back up of important data and then try to change the 
data cable of your Hard Disk or if not solve probably the hard disk (but i'm 
not a technician).
Then I mark this bug as new , so you have the time to fix this problem, then 
reply again.
