Could you please download an Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 live CD image, and burn
it to a disk:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso. Boot the
disk, and please test to see whether you get sound. If you get sound,
you might want to consider re-installing or upgrading to Lucid 10.04.
