Many of these machines will find themselves connected to the internet without firewalls in place. Allowing any kind of anonymous access by default is dubious from a security point of view.
Yes newbs may stumble at first, but there's something to be said for the default behaviour requiring newbs to come up to speed on security mechanisms.
