Also tried the
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r)
and no joy.
I still suspect it is related to the internal mic coming up as a third
mic ("digital") under Windows.
