@Adam: that sounds like a positive step. I have already tried adding nomodeset to the kernel-params, but I found that when X started it came up at only half brightness - the "fade in" effect starts but never finishes. It was virtually impossible to use the machine in this state; I had to switch to a vconsole to undo the change.
