This is just to provide some more information on the problem. Hope it helps to resolve it.
I have two thinkpad laptops: w510 and t500. On w510, lucid 64 bit was installed freshly. On t500, it was upgraded to lucid 32 bit from karmic. The file system is ext4 on w510, and ext3 on t500.
