I agree with William. Implementing this would mean a significant syntax
change, which is something that has to happen upstream. My guess is that
upstream won't implement it (for reasons explained in the debian page),
an in any case this has been hanging around for a year with no
resolution.
So I'm going to reject this bug. Don't feel shy about reopening it if
you disagree!
