... the workarounds I've tried in the past 24h:
- Use opendns (almost worked)
- Use google public dns
- connect over a 3g hotspot (for different DNS since that almost worked)
- blowing away ~/.gconf/apps/gwibber/ AND .cache/gwibber/
- blowing away gwibber-* databases in couchdb.
- Install dpkg's for gwibber, gwibber-service and python-libproxy (a depend) 
from maverick - no dice.

Something is still wrong. With the exception of install the packages
from maverick, I tried these fixes over and over in various
combinations. I'm very confused as to how this could have worked once
with a different DNS server, but then never again.
