sources.list is empty? That's WEIRD. To solve it, open up the "Terminal", in the Accessories category. Type the following: sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list which will open the file in a text editor (with administrative privileges). Because you said the file is blank, I've pasted a normal one, with that repository enabled, at http://paste.ubuntu.com/477703/ Paste that into the text editor, then try an update.
