sources.list is empty? That's WEIRD.

To solve it, open up the "Terminal", in the Accessories category. Type the 
following:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
which will open the file in a text editor (with administrative privileges). 
Because you said the file is blank, I've pasted a normal one, with that 
repository enabled, at http://paste.ubuntu.com/477703/
Paste that into the text editor, then try an update.

I get this when I try to open Synaptic...it doesn't say where to repoort it so 
here it is: E: malformed line 43 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (URI 
parse) E: the list of sources could not be read. Go to the repository dialog to 
correct the problem. E:_ cache>open()failed, please report
