OK, I did it again. It asked for my password again, then when gedit opened it had the colons already there where I put them. I minimized gedit and tried opening synaptic and got that error message. Do I need to do a complete reboot for it to take...if I do I'll loose this connection with you and I'm not sure how to get it back (which might be good for you!)
