It's not a bug. Gnome uses /usr/bin/gnome-wm to start the window
manager. This one uses x-window-manager only if it can't find an
official WM... you can override the window manager by putting "export
WINDOW_MANAGER=<yourchoice>" in ~/.gnomerc.
