Ok I have tried to upgrade the new packages.
it looks like a lot of the dependencies were not installed
normally I use synaptic or apt-get
this time I pre-downloaded and installed from within mc.
seems like I need: libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 libgtk2.0-dev
libgstreamer0.10-dev libcanberra-gtk-dev
