This is neither PHP nor PCRE bug — the default backtrack limit
(xontrolled by pcre.backtrack_limit configuration directive) used by PHP
is too low for this case.
That is,
$ php

$res = preg_match("/^(?:[^\[\]{}']+|'[^']*')+:(?:[^\[\]{}']+|'[^']*')+$/",
"a:bbbbbbbbbbbbb");
echo $res, ' ', preg_last_error(), "\n";
?>
0 2
2 is PREG_BACKTRACK_LIMIT_ERROR.
