Shared Libraries for Alsa Aplications, This is where I tracked it to, & it's actually the name/group I removed via software center that caused it to gut GNOME. (Several months ago.) I've not tested it since, but I suspect it either got fixed or was too low of a priority. (or fixed and not annotated.)

First, due to a problem with alsa suddenly not finding my audio card, I figured I would give OSS a shot. So I went to my Software Center and proceeded to remove all ALSA stuff that it listed under installed software. Then as I worked down the list, I watched in horror as my GNOME stuff started to go wonky, then crash. Evidently there is -1- module in GNOME that is tied into the ALSA that if you remove that part/App in ALSA, it causes Gnome to gut itself in a flurry of un-installs. Which if you are new to Ubuntu or even Linux in general it is rather disheartening. If it were not for my dual boot to winbloz I'd have not got past the command prompt. I am going to deliberately remove thevarious ALSA packages to sort out which package is doing this & will report back once I've figured out which one is the culprit. I expect I will be able to crash GNOME & my pc via the Software Center yet again. I'm not amused, this sort of thing should not be possible. M.
