It seems there's another error, the double entry. sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list and delete one of the two lines.
After that, sudo apt-get update. -- I get this when I try to open Synaptic...it doesn't say where to repoort it so here it is: E: malformed line 43 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (URI parse) E: the list of sources could not be read. Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
