In Alsamixer, the headphone volume was at 0 and it refused to budge. I could change other volumes OK.
I had the headphone and external mic plugged in when I booted. I also tried not having them plugged in when I booted, but plugging them in on the fly. It appears that Ubuntu does not detect the plugging-in. (Windows 7 does, so it's not a hardware problem.) The echo commands said "bash: ....reconfig: Permission denied" even if I used sudo.
