This situation is still the case in GRUB Legacy, and so this bug
shouldn't be closed against grub.  However, it is fixed in grub2 with a
new feature: you can write the full name of a menu entry in GRUB_DEFAULT
in /etc/default/grub, rather than its number.

Thus, instead of GRUB_DEFAULT=2, you can write something like:

  GRUB_DEFAULT='Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.35-14-generic'

This is more descriptive and less error-prone.
