I'm attaching an MP3 file that triggers the bug, though it's not
specific to this one file, I have hundreds that do it from different
sources. I can reproduce this problem every time by:

1. Loading the MP3 in VLC
2. Start playing it
3. If I let it play it will play for several minutes, then the loud screeching 
"static" starts
4. It's exasperated if I move the slider to seek different parts of the file a 
number of times, but this isn't necessary to reproduce
5. Once the static starts, if I hit PAUSE, I can watch the VLC process in top 
going from 30MB of RES to 3.0+ GB within a few seconds. At this point the 
system runs out of RAM and swap and crashes.

Gxine and Windows Media Player both play the file flawlessly.
