Thanks Luke for your time - very much appreciated.
I installed modules package for version 2.6.32-24-generic strictly to  
your instructions. I do now get sound from the CDROM but there are now  
2 problems :
1 The sound is very poor with lots of noise
2 There is no sound coming from the line-in jack on the soundcard
Rebooting to Windows and everything is fine. I forgot to tell you that  
from the beginning I got the Linux system sounds loud and clear (eg  
startup sounds)
