@David Henningsson: OK, I stopped pulseaudio. Then, I was able to do #17. This does not solve the pb (but output still works). Even worse: now System> Preferences > Sound pops up a window saying "Waiting for sound system to respond". Shall I revert the Pulseaudio stop step or is it due to anything else? Hope this info can contribute to something.
