Update on progress I have recently made in overcoming this problem. I can now
boot up to the GUI desktop!
How did I achieve this? I decided to remove the hardware driver, NVIDIA
accelerated graphics driver (version current) which I had inherited from
10.04.1 when I upgraded to 10.10. I was then able to boot up without freezing.
System>Administration>Hardware Drivers still recommended this driver so I
reactivated it and to my surprise I was still able to boot up without freezing.
It would appear that the problem is not with Plymouth but down to the hardware
driver.
The problem is, however, only partially solved. I reported the problem from my
main computer but it also existed on my older stand by/back up computer. This
uses the NVIDIA 96 driver on 10.04.1 so I removed this on 10.10 which then
booted up without freezing. I have been unable to find a driver which is
recommended on this machine and boots up without freezing, I intend to report a
new bug on this problem.
I will be pleased to provide any further information if requested.
