I ran the Ubuntu update manager today, quite a few updates including apparently various samba related packages.
The end result is that after the required re-boot (Security update to already installed Kernel 2.6.32-24-generic I believe) network browsing is now working. It is a little slow compared to browsing using windows Vista on the same machine, but at least it is working.
