Hi All, Various answers: 1) Killing gnome-settings-daemon doesn't help much since there are so many other things (e.g. even metacity now) 2) matejic's workaround is probably the right one - turn off autospawn and then you can kill pulse; that seems to work.
I'm happy to close this given the turning off autospawn is probably the right answer.
