Sounds like what I'm finding. I have just done a completely fresh install of Kubuntu 10.04, to dual-boot, on a spare partition in my VectorLinux box. On first, and every subsequent boot of Lucid I am unable to do a grapical login. Initially I though it was a login fault but on switching to tty02 I found I could login smotthly. On later attempts at a graphical login I noticed that the screen momentarily filled with rubbish before returning to the graphical login prompt.
The installation was done from the 'kubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso' image. >From tty02 I examined the logs and noticed that syslog gained the following >every time I tried. "Aug 23 18:49:58 DeanMachine kdm_greet[1946]: Cannot load /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/faces/.default.face: No such file or directory". A look in the given 'kdm' directory showed:-it contained nothing but the following directories: 'patterns', 'pics', 'programs', 'sessions' and 'themes'. There is no 'faces' directory. As this is a completely fresh installation onto freshly formatted partitions then I would guess that this might be a problems in the packages ? I am, for the moment, not going to disturb the installation by trying to fix it. You will appreciate, though, that I am unable to use any of Kubuntus bug-handling tools. I can, however, use the VL installation to examine Lucids files. Any further info I might give?
