Courier IMAP is listening on both port 143 (no SSL) and 993 (SSL).
To verify this, from the machine in question, try:
telnet 127.0.0.1 143
This should get a response that includes the phrase Courier-IMAP ready.
Then try it from the client machine that couldn't connect to get the
mail:
telnet [servername] 143
That should get the same result.
