Since floppies weren't automounting, I added a line for the device to /etc/fstab:
/dev/sdc /mnt/floppy msdos noauto,user 0 0 ... and made sure /mnt/floppy existed. When I then inserted a floppy and told Ubuntu to mount /dev/sdc, the command got no error, the drive made the appropriate noises, but then it didn't show up on /etc/mtab. A command was able to read from the drive, though, referring to it as /dev/sdc. But directory /mnt/floppy continued to appear empty.
