Thank you for your effort. I've tried other disks: 1. with some CDRW, I could not format (both quick and normal) it. K3b failed with a "Blanking error", brasero reported success (quick format), but the disk was still not formatted. 2. Another DVD-R showed up as "Blank DVD" once, I've then ejected it (from the hardware eject button), and it got not detected as a blank medium anymore (also when tried a third time now).

Regarding the regression tests, I do not think it's worth the effort: what would it help if you knew that it worked in Hardy (it did!); I am not even sure that I could boot from USB (never tried). I can only say that it probably regressed during Lucid development and still does not work (reliably) in Maverick.
