I fired off an email to nvidia to clear up a few things and here's the good news:

Both the 1.0-71xx and 1.0-96xx legacy branches will continue to be supported for critical bug fixes, and future Linux kernel & Xorg compatibility updates. We're aware that 1.0-96xx is not clearly labeled as a legacy branch here and are taking steps to correct that: http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html However, 1.0-9631 remains available via the Archive links on that same webpage.
