I think the main advantage is more eyeballs on the code and devs earning 
respect 
when they write good code.  Pride in one's work and admiration in other 
people's 
code lead to some OpenSource devs earning almost Rock-God status and others 
hiding behind apologies for temporary kludges.  If you know that no-one is 
going 
to read your code again and have to throw something together in a hurry to earn 
a pay-packet then the quality is unlikey to be so good.  All this is a 
distraction from those great posts and all that about Xml and stuff
