Does this still occur if you boot the Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" alpha 3 Live CD and then update Totem and GStreamer to the latest official versions, followed by installing the other gstreamer packages (gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, gstreamer0.10-plugins- ugly if I am remembering correctly)?
